Off Season Tips

Most of the race series are over or winding down, which leads us into the off season. It is essential to use the off season to your advantage. Make sure to work on your weaknesses as they will give you the most benefits. Certainly take some time off after the season. Let the body rest and have some fun, if you exercise do it just to stay in shape.

Once you are eager and ready to ride again you have taken enough time off.
The off season is a great time to push, and then once the season starts, maintaining is the goal. It is hard to ramp up to much during the season as your body is worn down from the racing and travel, and that is a time you are susceptible to getting sick when your immune system is low.

When the season starts it is best to back down on training for recovery purposes making sure that when you get to your race you are a caged lion, not fatigued wondering how you will make it through a race.  Also making sure not to burn out from to much training and riding in the off season, this is a big one that many riders don’t do correctly.

You need to make sure that you rate yourself on everything involved with racing. Begin with the riding and figure out what you are great at and give yourself a 10 and then things you need to improve give yourself a 5 or below.  Anything that you are not a 6 or higher you need to work on.  Do this with things like riding, training, mental, nutrition, bike set up and anything and everything that you can think of that helps or hinders your racing or riding.  Once you know what your strengths and weaknesses are you can go about fixing them.

Remember too make the off season a time to improve what you are not great at.  Good luck in the 2010 season!
